Co-sleeping is key culprit in sudden infant deaths
Caught this article on Channel News Asia and thought it might be good to share this important message.....
PARIS : More than half of sudden infant deaths reviewed in a study released Wednesday occurred while the babies shared a bed or sofa with a parent. The incidence of so-called sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, increased when the adult "co-sleeping" with the infant had recently consumed alcohol or drugs, the study found.
SIDS entered the medical vocabulary some 40 years ago to describe cases in which babies, mainly two to six months old, died for reasons that defied explanation. Since then, research has identified several SIDS risk factors related to behaviour.
Sleeping on the tummy rather than on the back, for example, was far more likely to lead to an otherwise unexplained deaths. Soft objects such as pillows in a baby's crib, along with mothers who smoke, were also associated with a higher number of deaths. Public awareness campaigns in many developed countries have cut death rates by more than half - from about 1-in-800 live births to less than 1-in-2,000 - over the last two decades.
But questions remained about how to account for this dwindling number of cases, and whether they occur more frequently in some sectors of society than others. To help find answers, a team of researchers led by Peter Fleming of St Michael's Hospital in Bristol, Britain, studied the 80 unexplained SIDS cases that occurred in southwestern England from 2003 through 2006.
They compared them with two other control groups, one with 82 "high risk" infants of smoking, socially-deprived, single mothers with two or more kids, and the other with 87 babies from randomly selected families. Of the SIDS infants, 54 per cent died while co-sleeping with a parent. "Much of this excess may be explained by a significant... interaction between co-sleeping at recent parental use of alcohol or drugs," the researchers said.
In the two control groups, the rate of co-sleeping was about 20 per cent. The study, published in the British Medical Journal, also noted that one fourth of the infants who died were swaddled, and one fifth used a pillow, a far higher percentage than in either control group. Socioeconomic deprivation did not seem to be a factor.
"The dangers of this combination of behaviours are, for the first time, convincingly shown in this study," Edwin Mitchell, a professor at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, noted in a commentary, also in the BMJ. "We have learnt that SIDS is largely preventable," he continued, calling for better parental education.

Household insects not the only ones at risk ...
Chanced upon this article which i thought would be important to share.....
Singapore TODAY Newspaper: Household insects not the only ones at risk ...
Jul 31, 2009
WASHINGTON - Patients with childhood leukaemia have elevated levels of household pesticides in their urine, according to a new study by the Georgetown University Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Centre.
"We compared urine samples from children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and their mothers with healthy children and their moms," said study researcher Offie Soldin. "We found elevated levels of common household pesticides more often in the mother-child pairs affected by cancer."
The research was published in August's issue of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring.
"We shouldn't assume that pesticides caused these cancers, but our findings support the need for more research in this area. We know pesticides are found in at least 85 per cent of households, but obviously not all the children in these homes develop cancer," added Ms Soldin.
Conducted between January 2005 and January 2008, the study found that 33 per cent of mothers of kids with ALL used pesticides, as compared with 14 per cent among women with healthy children. - AFP

Father's Day 2009 - 21 June 2009
Today is the 2nd time in my entire lifetime celebrating Father's day with Daddy. It started with my usual sunday class at GUG where i was given a "Star" for my excellent behaviour (please don't tell anyone that all my classmates get one almost every week).
Right after my usual short nap and a snappy lunch meal, i got dressed up for the pool to have a swim. Though i was a pretty good "swimmer", Daddy insisted that he held on to me while i skillfully glide in the pool. I had great fun! You can enjoy my excitment with the following video:
After my swim, i proceed to another round of snooze, preparing for the big feast in the evening with Grandma, Grandpa, Mummy and Daddy for Father's Day. The location is a "Sze Char" restaurant at Tiong Bahru known as "Por Kee". It was an appetising dinner with my family until.... some stupid mosquitos started harassing me.....
Of course, there is still more. Right after dinner, we went to Tiong Bahru Plaza for desserts. While Mummy had her "Mango Pomelo ice", Grandma ordered a bowl of "Walnut Sesame Paste" to share.
In all a fun filled day! Shall do it again real soon.... :)

Don't take MY Balloon!
I wonder why adults are so fickle.... simply don't understand why they insist on snatching a balloon from a small kid like me! Even when i pointed to this individual that there are more balloons displayed at a store nearby, she still continued to chase after me.... duh....

Irritated by Spammers!
So sorry for not being able to write much these days.... been pretty irritated by spammers who said they liked my page yet putting up a fake link to some dubious website. I am no longer sure if this is the best place to keep you updated on the various happenings in my life.
I understand that Daddy and Mommy are very active on "Facebook". Though i had an account as well, i seldom update my profile except when my parents helped upload new pictures or videos of me. I also found out recently that "Twitter" is getting more fashionable. Pls give your comments if i should neglect this blog and just "Facebook" or "Twitter".
Meanwhile, i will try to get some nice pictures uploaded by my next posting (in a couple of hours)... :)

Aiden's Birthday & Roti Prata
~ Aiden's Birthday ~
This happened on the 8th of Feb when Daddy and Mummy decided that i was big enough to eat Indian food. We took a drive down River Valley road where this famous Roti Prata shop resides. I ordered myself a plain crispy prata while Daddy & Mummy shared a mushroom cheeze prata. In all, a wonderful supper, completed with a cuppa Teh Tarik!
